Making this site usable
We want this site to be usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards or magnification. This statement sets out where we stand and what to do if something does not work.
Our target
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard most public bodies and large institutions apply, and the one we hold ourselves to.
What we have done
Pages use a single, ordered heading structure. Every form field has an accessible name, and the anti-spam fields are hidden from assistive technology. The simulators are operable by keyboard: the selects, sliders and buttons all take focus, and focus is visible. Charts carry text labels and every result is also written out in words, so nothing is available only as a picture. Colour contrast is checked against the AA thresholds. The site works down to small screens without horizontal scrolling, and animation is reduced for anyone whose system asks for that.
Where we fall short
Some links in the footer are slightly smaller than the 24-pixel target size the guidelines recommend. One decorative background image carries no alt attribute where an empty one would be correct. Charts inside the tools convey trend and scale visually; the underlying figures are in the surrounding text and in the downloadable summary, but not as a data table.
We would rather list these than claim a clean sheet. They are on the list to fix.
