Institutional Communication
Situation
Artefact91 designed and built the national website for Black Queer Canada, a movement created by and for Black 2SLGBTQI+ people across the country. The six-month engagement covered the full site in English and French — the founding story, the research the movement publishes, and the partner organisations behind it.
Decision
To give a national movement a home that reads as its own — carrying its voice rather than a sector template, holding its evidence alongside its story, and working equally in both official languages from launch rather than as a translation added later.
Bilingual parity is where sites of this kind usually break: the French build arrives late, loses layout, or drifts out of sync as content changes. The site also had to hold two registers at once — the movement's own voice, direct and unhedged, and research findings that needed to survive being cited.
Movement
A full bilingual site launched over six months, with the English and French builds maintained in parallel rather than one derived from the other. It carries the movement's story and mandate, the Back 2 Our Roots research, and the partner network — in a visual system built for the movement rather than borrowed from the sector.
